Welcome to Horse Country
Camden’s love affair with horses began in the late 19th century when the area served as a popular winter resort for Northerners attracted to our mild climate. These snowbirds brought their horses with them and equine sports like polo, fox hunting, horse shows and steeplechase quickly grew in popularity. Today, Camden is known as the “Steeplechase Capital of the World” and is home to the Carolina Cup, Colonial Cup, National Steeplechase Museum, South Carolina Equine Park, The Camden Hunt, Wateree Hounds, and the Kirkwood Polo Field, a National Historic Landmark and the third-oldest active polo field in America.
The real stars of the show, however, are the horses! Camden’s horse population is considered one of the largest in South Carolina and their accommodations are as varied as their pedigrees. The Stable Tour is a behind-the-scenes look at a few of the barns and farms that grace our landscape and create an equestrian community that is uniquely Camden.
